FINAL DAY of THE KAURILAND WINTER DRESSAGE SERIES HELD at THE WAIKATO EQUESTRIAN CENTRE SUNDAY 5TH AUGUST 2007
At last, the day arrived for the final of the Kauriland Winter Dressage Series. The previous day it had rained heavily but luckily the Sunday cleared enough so that riders were able to compete without getting drenched.
With lots of scratchings, the classes were relatively small.
However, those who stood a chance to gain placings made sure that
they withstood the wintry conditions to challenge their rivals.
The people organizing the Kaurilands series over the 21 years were presented with a framed certificate of “Special Thanks” enhanced by the Kauriland Logo and signed by President John Guy and Vice President Dave Hall.
These awards were presented by Councillor Pippa Mahood to Kerry Murphy, Noeline Jeffries, Lynda Guy, Christine Hartstone, and
Edna Loveridge.
After the cutting of the cake ceremony (made by Noeline Jeffries and iced by Susan Edwards), all was ready for the Mounted prizegiving which took place regardless of the rain that was starting to set in with those riders present and Mounted receiving their awards.
The Warmblood ‘topscore’ prize was presented by Sue Berkahn.
The Mare ‘topscore’ prize was presented by Nicoli Fife.
The Masters ‘topscore’ prize was presented by Paula Jeffries.
The remaining topscore prizes were presented by Susan Edwards,
John and Lynda Guy, and Kerry Murphy.
A very well run series with scores out promptly thanks to Christine Hartstone and Juliet Bruce working away on the computer and Lynda Guy writing up the results and placings on the score boards.
Many thanks also to the judges and writers over the series, with special thanks to St Andrews Branch of the Hamilton Pony Club for the catering and Ngaruawahia Pony Club for setting up the arenas.

Yesterday was also the 21st year of the Kaurilands competition so all in all quite a milestone for some riders who have been there for all of that time.

First of all, let me say what a privilege it is to judge the riders of the Waikato and beyond who are brave enough to come into a competition arena and be judged on what is largely a negative assessment tool based on marks which denote what the rider and horse are not doing right!!
I try very hard to find the positive from “no bend on circle, resisting, mouth open” to “maintained rhythm and active” and come up with a 6. My writers get cramp and barely lift their heads from the sheets throughout. I usually judge the lower grades, so see a lot of the basics of dressage not happening and would implore riders to concentrate more on suppleness (bend), activity and obedience. Don’t get me started on free walk on a long rein!
I really enjoy practice days when judge and riders can get together after the test and discuss the marks and reasons for them. Judges have to be up front with the marks and I would also encourage riders to go and see the judge personally, if after the sheets are available, there is a query.
Happy and productive riding
